Chrome-alumina lining brick is manufactured from α-Al₂O₃ (α-alumina) with the addition of an appropriate amount of chromium oxide and fine powder of chrome-corundum sinter (clinker), using a forming and high-temperature firing process. Its primary mineral component is a solid solution of α-Al₂O₃–Cr₂O₃, and the secondary component is a small amount of complex spinel (which may also be absent). The chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) content ranges from 1% to 30% by mass of the refractory brick. Chrome-alumina lining brick is also called “chrome corundum brick.”
The high-temperature performance of chrome-corundum brick surpasses that of pure corundum brick, due to the formation of a continuous solid solution between Cr₂O₃ and Al₂O₃ at high temperatures, which enhances the strength and durability of the product. Its cold crushing strength at room temperature typically exceeds 150 MPa, which is significantly higher than that of ordinary corundum brick.
Chrome-alumina lining brick is widely used in high-temperature industrial furnaces, such as those in the steel and glass industries. It possesses excellent corrosion resistance and erosion resistance, making it suitable for use as a lining in key components such as melting zones and furnace arches. This material has also proven itself outstandingly in the ceramic industry, where it withstands high temperatures, erosion, and abrasive wear, increasing the service life of kilns. Furthermore, chrome-corundum brick plays an important role in non-ferrous metallurgy—such as in the smelting of copper, lead, zinc, and other metals—and is widely used in various types of furnaces.
